The bauble is a German invention

It wasn't until around the 1890s in Denmark that baubles became established among Christmas tree decorations. It wasn't just the round glass baubles, but all kinds of glass ornaments imported from Germany. The glass decorations often depicted things not normally associated with Christmas. For example, people liked to celebrate society's technological progress, or to include items particularly dear to them on their tree. It was therefore not uncommon for symbols of these things to adorn the tree in the form of glass figures.
In the southeast German town of Lauscha there were several glass factories which, since the 17th century, had been known for producing glass eyes, among other things. As early as 1597, several of the town's glassmakers began producing round and very simple glass baubles.
It wasn't until American shopkeeper Frank Woolworth visited the German town, took a batch of baubles home, and introduced them to American consumers that the round glass ornaments began to spread.
By around 1890, sales of baubles had risen to as much as 25 million dollars in Woolworths stores alone.

Although the bauble has been around for many years, it still appears today in many variations and reinterpretations.
